Welcome to the blog… a closer look into the mind behind Sophia Grace Photography.

My love for photography goes way back to 7th grade, when I begged my dad for a camera so I could take Instagram photos for my friends in our backyards. And, as any dad who has trouble saying no to his daughter and only child at the time would, he got me one, a Canon Rebel T5, to be exact (and I cringe thinking of what those first photoshoots probably looked like). But to be honest, that camera took me further into this business than I’d probably like to admit and it definitely made its money back a hundred times over.

I think this paints the picture of my photography journey: always learning, evolving, and staying open to new ideas and opportunities.

I never really saw myself as a blogger. Let's be clear about that. But I had this idea this morning, and I’m giving it my best shot. But I’m not a blogger. Maybe the better title is a “person who has written a blog post before.”  My goal for this space is to be open and honest about my journey as a photographer, share my thoughts and growth, and give my clients a more personal look into who I am. And even if this ends up being the least-trafficked part of my website, I hope it keeps my creative mind going.

Okay, let’s get into my little slice of the world, Bar Harbor, Maine. I grew up here- well in Southwest Harbor actually(but close enough), and (don’t tell anyone I said this, we like to keep it a secret) yes, living here is worth the hype. Summers are busy, like obviously, it’s a community that thrives on tourism  but there’s something special about that energy when May rolls around and all the local spots reopen. It’s a rhythm, a sense of tradition that only a seasonal town can have. Nothing compares to that awakening every spring.

In the winter, I teach at a local elementary school. Working with kids gives me a different perspective on the world and helps me slow down to appreciate small moments. This is something I try to bring into my photography. Slowing down helps me avoid forcing an outcome and lets the real, natural moments shine through.

Bar Harbor is unique because it’s home to Acadia National Park. Most visitors don’t realize Bar Harbor is just one of several towns on Mount Desert Island which are all equally beautiful(like Southwest Harbor) and full of hidden corners to explore. Our year-round population hovers around 5,000, which is less than half the enrollment at the college I attended. Crazy I know! It’s the kind of place where you always run into someone you know at the grocery store and everyone’s connected in the most interesting ways.

I love this sense of community  and it deeply influences my work. I want to capture the beauty of my home and honor it for all that it is. I mean, who else can say their tiny hometown draws millions of visitors every summer?

So, follow along with me here as I share stories, and probably a few rambles about life, photography, and my wonderful corner of Maine. Here’s to chasing good light, small-town moments, and growing through every frame.
